Information about the festival

Try a variety of dance styles in workshops, simply let yourself drift and enjoy the live music. All at free admission. Even the stage of the Isarphilharmonie will transform into a dance floor, so this is your chance to experience the grand hall from the performers’ perspective. Singles, pairs, groups – all are welcome. The dance floor is yours!

Whether hip hop or tango, samba or Gaga, disco or salsa is your thing, the annual Tanz den Gasteig lets you take over the whole HP8 site. Hall E, Hall X, the rehearsal hall, rooms of the MVHS adult education centre in Building K, and even the stage of the Isarphilharmonie will serve as dance floors from 3 PM in the afternoon until late at night. Whether novice or professional dancer; youngster or senior; single, couple or group, there’s something here for everyone: from workshops covering a range of dance styles to inclusive dancing with a sign language interpreter. Or if you’re not in the mood to move, why not just listen to the live music or let yourself drift and see what you discover.

Tanz den Gasteig 2023: Flower Power!

2023’s highlight took up the Flower Power Festival theme: in a series of workshops with students from the Abraxas Musical Academy, you could rehearse two songs from the classic musicals Rocky Horror Show and Hair. A party with disco and flower power music like funk and soul was, of course, compulsory in the light of last year’s theme: DJs Dr. Getdown (Feelgood Selection) & Bob (Krew), reinterpreted the music of the hippie era at the Funky Flower Power Party, both playing their take on the music of peace & love. And Galaxy Walker and The Hoodstarz provided “groovisdom”, with their own distinct flavour of funk, soul, hip hop and pop. In the Hippie-Salon, make-up artists offered festivalgoers a free makeover for that perfect festival look.

The entire outdoor area of the Gasteig HP8 turned into a party mile before filling with headphone-wearing festivalgoers for the Silent Disco from 7 PM. Indoors, meanwhile, the volume was cranked up until well after midnight, with Harry Klein in Hall X, among others.

Tanz des Gasteig 2023 was an event of Gasteig Cultural Foundation in cooperation with Gasteig München GmbH. With the kind support of Bernd Wendeln and Motel One.

We would like to thank all partners and institutions, especially the artists, for their participation: Münchner Volkshochschule, Artemis Schauspielstudio München, Make Up Artist Factory München, Harry Klein Club

Tanz den Gasteig 2022: Premiere on the new site

Dance enthusiasts came in droves and danced the night away: On 11 June 2022 several thousand celebrated Munich’s biggest dance party at the new Gasteig HP8.

In glorious weather, people danced and danced, from the afternoon until late at night. In the listed Hall E, kids tried their hand at breakdancing or rocked the children’s disco while their parents practised samba steps. And all of it at free admission. The rehearsal hall was all about the new trends of waacking and voguing. And in Hall X, dance coach Grégory Darcy held workshops opening up new possibilities for dance and performance to people with and without disabilities.

The highlight was undoubtedly the stage of the Isarphilharmonie: Where stars and orchestras from all over the world usually perform, dance enthusiasts could swing to the sound of the 1920s – in the evening to live accompaniment by the Odeon Tanzorchester.

Outdoors, in front of Hall E, the samba percussion group Drumadama played every hour. So as not to keep the neighbourhood awake all night, there was a silent disco from 9 PM, in which music is played through individual headphones. Indoors, on the other hand, the volume was cranked up one more time, with freestyle dancing to the live concert by the Munich band SiEA and the club vibes of DJ Stefanie Raschke from the Harry Klein Club.

“There’s always plenty going on in the Gasteig HP8, but in terms of buzz and variety, this has beaten all records. Our motto is: The Gasteig is for everyone. Today, truly all and everyone was here.”
