About us

The Gasteig is where Munich lives and breathes culture. Few other venues in Europe offer such a diverse range of events involving music, theatre, dance, films and exhibitions.

Culture and open spaces for all

The Gasteig is a magnet for culture enthusiasts and inquisitive minds. Year-round, many thousands of Munich’s denizens visit “their” Gasteig. So do people from all over the world – be it for a concert, a language course, to dance or to borrow library items. Or simply to take a stroll in our spacious grounds.

“Everyone is welcome at the Gasteig! Here, you can immerse yourself in culture or just sit and enjoy a coffee; relax, enjoy, meet with others or discover something new and surprising.”

Max Wagner, former Managing Director of Gasteig München GmbH

The Gasteig has been part of Munich since 1985 and has always been a popular destination for a night out. But also in the daytime, visitors young and old can enjoy film festivals, high quality concerts, readings and exhibitions here. Recently, Europe’s largest arts centre and its resident institutions have moved to new premises, where we continue to provide our full range of art, education and infotainment.

Providing an inspiring backdrop and platform for projects and initiatives of all kinds, our buildings and event halls offer plenty of space for experiencing culture year-round, including subculture and experimental projects – space for passion and emotion. Tickets for the diverse events are always available and affordable – often even

free of charge.

The cultural line-up has moved up the Isar river

Since autumn 2021, our main location is the Gasteig HP8. Located next to Heizkraftwerk Süd power station on the premises of utility company Stadtwerke München, our new venue offers everything that also defined our arts centre in Rosenheimer Straße. And yet our interim premises are different.

Back to the future

What will happen to the good old Gasteig on Rosenheimer Straße? At the moment, no events are taking place there, but that will change after its redevelopment. Take a tour of the New Gasteig and marvel at novel visions for Munich. This way

Gasteig HP8: The allure of the new

The Gasteig HP8 is located in the midst of an established neighbourhood and gets along very well with its neighbours. These include, among others, an art studio, a film studio, a carpentry, a car workshop and a tyre shop. While the original Gasteig is being made fit for the future, visitors are flocking up the Isar river. There are plenty of reasons to do so:

  • To marvel at the new Isarphilharmonie, this acoustic miracle with its magical atmosphere
  • To be inspired by the industrial charm of Hall E, built in 1926
  • To savour the dual pleasure of culture and cuisine in the HP8
  • To take advantage of the ample space for reading, learning, chatting and enjoying life
  • Because of the hospitality, welcoming atmosphere and equal opportunities they find here
  • Because the Gasteig HP8 is accessible, inclusive, vibrant and multicultural
  • Because …

The Gasteig family

The Gasteig unites a network of institutions that all bear “Munich” in their name and help shape its cultural life: the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich, the Munich Chamber Orchestra, the Munich Philharmonic, the Munich Public Library, the Münchner Volkshochschule adult education centre and Gasteig München GmbH.

The staff of these renowned cultural and educational establishments work year round to ensure that our events are of the highest quality; that all of Munich can enjoy music, dance, art and literature; that everyone has the chance to broaden their horizons.
