Information about the festival

For the first time, the international go drag! festival is happening in Munich. Curated by Berlin gender performance legend Bridge Markland and Munich drag artist Ruby Tuesday, its focus is not, as one might expect, on the well-known drag queens, i.e. men who impersonate women, but on drag kings and queers – female, trans* and non-binary artists.

What makes a man, what makes a woman? Do these binaries even exist? And if so, how meaningful are they? From 1 to 5 May 2024, artists will be asking these and other questions in a wide variety of performances – and providing answers in many different ways.

After two successful editions in Berlin, a host of institutions will, for the first time, converge on Munich to showcase the diversity of female, non-binary and trans* drag arts, who will present a world of glitter and resistance, of gender boundaries turned upside down.

“For Munich, we have conceived a special rendition of the go drag! festival that the world has never seen before: Focussing on drag art by female, trans* and non-binary artists, go drag! munich is the only festival in the world of its kind. Munich has a vibrant, creative young drag king and Quing scene that’s worthy of our support.”

Bridge Markland, curator

Cabaret shows present first-class drag king talents from Munich as well as newcomers and international artists. Around 30 events over 5 days offer everything from theatre with puppets to lecture performances and concerts: glitz and glamour, depth and tragedy, deeply-felt emotions and plenty of humour. Discussions, lectures and exhibitions invite you to explore drag as an artistic and political form of expression. Films on the topic and a drag flea market round off the programme.
