Information about the festival

Try a variety of dance styles in workshops, simply let yourself drift and enjoy the live music. All at free admission. Even the stage of the Isarphilharmonie will transform into a dance floor, so this is your chance to experience the grand hall from the performers’ perspective.

Whether hip-hop or hula hoop is your thing, whether teatime dance, the sound of musicals or folk dance, voguing or waacking – Tanz den Gasteig has something in store for everyone. Professionals and beginners, singles, couples and groups, kids and senior citizens take over the entire Gasteig HP8 from the afternoon until late into the night. The Gasteig is open for everyone, including those with special needs.

Tanz den Gasteig 2024 – with breakdance battle

One of this year’s highlights was breakdancing. An Olympic discipline for the first time, it was of course a must at Tanz den Gasteig. As well as participative events to take part in, you could come and watch the live breakdance battle in the Isarphilharmonie.

Proceedings in the Isarphilharmonie started off with swing with the Odeon Tanzorchester before the Abraxas Musical Akademie, in full costume, invited everyone to join in with formation dancing to favourites from well-known musicals. The entire outdoor area of the Gasteig HP8 turned into a dance floor: There was Charleston and swing outside the rehearsal hall, while the legendary Silent Disco on the Am Kulturkraftwerk plaza invited everybody to put on headphones and dance to favourite hits. Dancing takes energy, so there was be plenty of food stalls for when you’re feeling hungry. Later in the evening, we cranked up the volume indoors: There was party into the night with salsa in Hall E, hip-hop in the Isarphilharmonie and the Harry Klein Club with band and DJ in Hall X.

“What excited us the most was the diversity and vibe of the audience. We’re in our mid-20s, and normally, when we go out partying, the crowd is quite homogeneous. But not at this event: we’re in the techno space and suddenly there’s a retired couple having fun. It was a safe space in which everyone could move about and try things out. Great event; should happen more than once a year.”
