The duo’s programme includes works by Yun Isang, Ilnam Chang, Taeksoo Kim, Schubert and Brahms, among others.
Over the past 150 years, sparked by the influx of Western music into Korea, the country’s classical music landscape has undergone a seismic transformation. Korea has produced outstanding artists and composers whose names are indelibly etched in the annals of music history. The prevalence of Korean artists is evident in concert halls and opera houses throughout the world. But also in Korea itself, the passion for classical music has become deeply ingrained in the country’s culture. From the 1920s to the 1970s, Korean art song, which combined the lyricism of Korean poetry with Western musical nuances, resulted in a distinct genre of its own. Telling of rustic village scenes to school yards, back alleys and moonlit windows, the echoes of these art songs were omnipresent, their melodies resonating with emotion and the true pulse of a culture. Their reach went far beyond the professional musician and the elite. Resembling an expansive cultural tapestry, they transcended all social differences, not unlike like the folk songs of old.
