In an annual ritual in the small Macedonian town of Štip, the local priest throws a wooden cross into the river each January and hundreds of men dive in after it. It is said that the man who succeeds in retrieving it will enjoy a future of wealth and good fortune. But this time, a woman not only joins in but succeeds in retrieving the cross. All hell breaks loose, but Petrunija holds on to the cross, not about to concede her victory.
