Eight-year-old Lucía doesn’t understand why everyone insists on regarding her as a boy and calling her by her birth name, Aitor. Her nickname, Cocó, doesn’t sit right either. In the summer holidays, her mother takes them to stay with her own mother, in a house linked to bee-keeping. There, alongside the women of her family, the transgender girl embarks on a quest for identity.  Just as the diversity of nature depends on countless colonies of bees, the supporting characters are essential for the main act, as daughter, mother and grandmother reflect on their personal perspectives on womanhood.

Basque director Estibaliz Urresola Solaguren’s debut feature is a sunny, work full of empathy that acknowledges the complexity of gender identity. At the 2023 Berlinale, Sofia Otero received a Silver Bear for her performance in the film.
