Pixel – a space for media, culture and participation

An activity space for the creative use of digital technology

In the shopping arcade in front of the Gasteig’s entrance, there’s a lot of soldering and tinkering, streaming and programming going on. Pixel is a space in the Gasteig where people of all ages can practise their creative use of digital technology. In this “Space for Media, Culture and Participation”, children and youngsters as well as adults can develop and hone their digital skills. As well as being a meeting place, the media lab in the Gasteig is a showcase for media culture in Munich.

Technical support and supervision for the laboratory is provided by Munich media expertise network Interaktiv, which unites a broad range of institutions with interdisciplinary as well as media and culture education expertise at the interface of culture, education and societal issues. A key element is the participation and appropriation of the space by different groups.

You can find the programme of events as well as further information (in German) here.

Tool library

Borrow tools and attend free DIY workshops

The Erfindergarden tool library is located in the row of shops on the Gasteig Forum next to the S-Bahn entrance. Every Tuesday ( 7:30 to 8 PM) and Saturday (10 to 12 AM), you can borrow good tools and other useful items there for a reasonable charge. In free DIY workshops, you can learn about the tools and equipment and meet like-minded people. DIY books are also available for borrowing. (For the Saturday library service, Erfindergarden is still looking for volunteers; if you’re interested, please contact them directly.)

Just reserve the tool you need – the loan items even include beer benches and tables – on the Erfindergarden website and collect it on a Tuesday or Saturday. Various items are available for a small rental fee of € 1 to 3 per day for up to 7 days. No need to buy your own tools for your project. Before borrowing for the first time, you will need to complete a one-time registration; on your first visit, your account must be verified with a photo ID.

At monthly meetings on every first Tuesday of the month at 7:30 PM, a different tool or device is presented each time.

Four reasons for using the tool library

  • Save money: In the Erfindergarden Tool Library, you can borrow tools and other items for € 1 to € 3 per day, exactly when you need them. You can keep the items for up to one week, letting you complete your work without having to buy a new tool for just the one project.
  • Save resources: Sharing means less mining of precious raw materials, less production, transport, packaging and scrap.
  • Save space: There are only few tools and other items in our homes that we actually need on a daily basis. So why not get rid of those rarely used items and just borrow what you need.
  • Meet like-minded people: In addition to borrowing tools, you can meet other DIY buffs in the workshops and at events.
