Jean Sibelius’ Violin Concerto is a tone painting of the vast, austere Finnish landscape with its lakes, forests and legendary figures. The principal painter at this concert is Dutch violinist Janine Jansen.

The soloist begins her brush strokes with a quiet, melancholic melody before building up to the “danse macabre” in the concerto’s challenging final movement. The Süddeutsche Zeitung described the expressive, devoted artist as “one of the most successful, stirring violinists of our time”. No less original than Sibelius’ work is the “Symphonie fantastique” – a profusion of lyrical rapture, thrills and pandemonium with which Hector Berlioz set new standards for the size of symphonic orchestras in 1830. With it, the Orchestre de Paris, under the baton of its principal conductor Klaus Mäkelä, concludes its guest performance in March.
