As an ardent film fan and singer, Jonas Kaufmann has a natural affinity to all the wonderful songs from film classics that have become popular throughout the world as soundtracks. For his new programme, The Sound of Movies, he has compiled hits from more than 80 years of film history, the spectrum ranging from Ich küsse ihre Hand, Madame to Hans Zimmer’s Nelle tue mani from the film Gladiator. With evergreens such as Moon River (Breakfast at Tiffany’s), Edelweiss (The Sound of Music), Singin’ in the Rain and Strangers in the Night, titles by Nino Rota and Ennio Morricone as well as highlights from Mario Lanza’s films, Kaufmann takes us on a captivating journey through all the great eras of film music.

Jonas Kaufmann will be accompanied by the Munich Symphony Orchestra, which draws on a wealth of experience in this genre, having recorded the soundtracks for many Hollywood films. Together with the “King of the Tenors”, they lend each title a special note.

“Cinema is unthinkable without music. Not only does the music amplify the impact of the image, it triggers feelings – usually even stronger and more enduring than any image. Music also works without film, but a film doesn’t work without music. No wonder, then, that since the invention of the talkies, great composers have been just as sought after by filmmakers as famous actors and directors. And what would the adventure films with Errol Flynn be without the music of Korngold, or the Hitchcock classics Vertigo and Psycho without the music of Bernard Herrmann? They would not be half as impactful. I dare say, any film that is stripped of the emotional tapestry of music loses much of its potency.”
