When they play tennis together, they argue all the time; when they play music together, they never argue at all. Brothers Lucas and Arthur Jussen have been performing as a piano duo ever since childhood. When they rehearse a new piece, they flip a coin to decide who takes which part. Francis Poulenc’s Concerto for Two Pianos seems like it was made for them: witty and playful, it’s also dreamy tone painting. In Petrushka, Igor Stravinsky lets the puppets dance. The music was created for a ballet in which marionettes come to life and are overwhelmed by their feelings. As usual, narrator Malte Arkona applies his wit and background knowledge to lead us through this Youth Concert.

Programme

  • Francis Poulenc: Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra in D minor
  • Igor Stravinsky: Petrushka, 1911 version
