This year’s autumn concert features Johann Sebastian Bach’s famous Concerto for Two Violins in D minor (BWV 1043). The demanding solo parts will be performed by children from the ranks of the orchestra. Under the baton of Johannes Schachtner, the orchestra will also perform Edvard Grieg’s Holberg Suite, which Grieg composed to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Danish-Norwegian writer Ludvig Holberg. Drawing on typical dance and song forms of the 18th century, the work was originally written for piano. Later, Grieg arranged the popular work for string orchestra. Josef Suk’s Meditation on the Old Czech Chorale St. Wenceslas for string orchestra was written in the summer of 1914. The song, addressed to the national saint of the Czech Republic, was considered a message to the patron and a request for a happy future for the Czech people.

With these three popular works from the string orchestra repertoire, this year’s programme is a special challenge for the orchestra’s young members, who are aged eight to 15 years.

Programme

  • Josef Suk (1874–1935): Meditation on the Old Czech Chorale St. Wenceslas for string orchestra, Op 35a
  • Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750): Concerto for Two Violins in D minor, BWV 1043
  • Edvard Grieg (1843–1907): From Holberg’s time – “Suite in olden style”, Op 40
