Trigger Warnings

The Gasteig offers a broad programme for people from all walks of life. Since you all bring your own life experiences with you, you will experience each event differently from other people. Some topics may trigger negative emotions in some of you or be upsetting or hurtful.

What are trigger warnings?

Trigger warnings warn about content that may be distressing to some people. They are intended to help you deal more effectively with potentially distressing content.  In psychology, the term “trigger” describes, for example, places, images, sounds or smells that trigger memories of traumatic experiences. Triggers can take traumatised people back to a situation that has put them under stress in the past.

The aim of trigger warnings is to prevent those affected from being excluded from social and cultural spaces and events that contain potential triggers. Their feelings are taken seriously and they are welcomed. The warnings can help them prepare and decide for themselves whether they want to expose themselves the topics.

For most events, the Gasteig is not itself the organiser and is not responsible for their content and implementation. If organisers inform us about sensitive content, we will include the trigger warnings here. If in doubt, please also contact the organisers directly. You can find their contact details on each announcement page.

08.07.2023: Mental Health Arts Festival

Some programme items may include topics related to depression, anxiety, trauma or/and suicide, which may cause distress. These events are indicated in the programme announcements. Please be mindful, take time to prepare and/or come with accompaniment. We recommend that you seek support if needed. For the duration of the festival, we have set up a discussion and information lounge, where you can talk to people from the Münchner Bündnis gegen Depression e. V., a charity that provides assistance with depression. You will find them in the Generator on the first floor of Hall E.
