Mahler’s groundbreaking Resurrection Symphony stands in many ways for transition and new beginnings – the perfect work to ring in the Munich Philharmonic’s new season.

  • Talise Trevigne, soprano
  • Okka von der Damerau, mezzo-soprano
  • Munich Philharmonic Choir; Andreas Herrmann, rehearsal
  • Munich Philharmonic
  • Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla, conductor

In this metaphor-packed symphony, Mahler deals with the great existential questions of becoming and passing away, with death and resurrection. It seems only logical that, to this end, Mahler should burst the boundaries of genre and instrumentation, overarchingly combine contrasting genres and dissolve the dimensions of time and space. Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla, who celebrated her acclaimed debut with the Munich Philharmonic in December 2022, brings together the different soundscapes of this immense work. And at the end, the soloists Okka von der Damerau and Talise Trevigne will join with the singers of the Philharmonic Choir, to proclaim the redemptive message: “Aufersteh’n, ja aufersteh’n wirst du!”
