- Aphrodite Patoulidou, soprano
- Munich Philharmonic
In this impressive programme, Canadian singer and conductor Barbara Hannigan digs into the deep-seated emotions of the “dark side” – from Charles Ives’ unanswered and hence perennial question of existence to Joseph Haydn’s “Mourning” symphony to Claude Vivier’s heart-rending retrospective of his childhood. The soprano part in Lonely Child – “a long song of solitude”, as the Canadian composer Vivier described his work – is taken by the intrepid Greek soprano Aphrodite Patoulidou.
Programme
- Charles Edward Ives: “The Unanswered Question”
- Ruth Crawford Seeger: Andante for string orchestra
- Charles Edward Ives: “Three Places in New England”
- Joseph Haydn: Symphony No 44 in E minor, Hob. I:44 “Mourning”
- Traditional: “Outborn”, Icelandic folk song (arranged by Aphrodite Patoulidou and Barbara Hannigan)
- Claude Vivier: “Lonely Child” for soprano and chamber orchestra
