Witold Lutosławski goes a step further in his Cello Concerto, turning the solo cello into a lone fighter in an emotionally charged confrontation with the orchestra. As Sol Gabetta puts it: “This concerto is like a war between an individual and the people.” The Polish conductor Krzysztof Urbański is well-versed in the music of his compatriot Lutosławski, and it was at his suggestion that Sol Gabetta took on this demanding concerto. Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No 7 is not quite as confrontational, but deadly serious nevertheless. No wonder, as Dvořák wanted to use this highly charged work to prove to the musical world that he could meet the expectations of the genre without denying his deep roots in Czech folk music.

Programme

  • Antonín Dvořák: Symphony No 7 in D minor, Op 70
