Until Mikis Theodorakis discovered her, Maria Farantouri wanted to become an opera singer. Instead, the singer, who Theodorakis referred to as “my priestess”, took on the female solo parts of many of his oratorios and song cycles. To this day, she remains Greece’s premier Theodorakis interpreter. After the composer’s death in September 2021, her concerts demonstrate that Theodorakis’ music has lost none of its magic: When Maria sings, the composer is in the room.
