There are two anniversaries to celebrate in the world of early music in 2023: one of its great exponents, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, will celebrates his 80th birthday, and his ensemble, the English Baroque Soloists, its 45th anniversary.

With this ensemble and with the Monteverdi Choir and Orchestra he played a leading role in the revival of early music and in the establishment of a historically informed performance practice in the world’s concert halls. A living legend, he continues to celebrate the heroes of Baroque and classical music. In 1998, Gardiner was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II, followed a few years later by the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, First Class, among other honours and awards. For all his devotion to music and busy career as a musician and conductor of several orchestras, he somehow manages to find the time to run an organic farm in his home in the south-west of England.
