The Gasteig Turns 40
The Gasteig is celebrating its 40th birthday! Hurray! Europe’s largest arts centre celebrates what it has been living and breathing for four decades now – culture and the arts. And that for a whole season.
Let’s celebrate together
At the Gasteig, you’ll find art and culture every day. In our 40th anniversary season, under the motto “Celebrating the arts!”, we are celebrating all that holds society together – diversity, creativity and enthusiasm. And we’re inviting you to join in the festivities again and again.
There will be birthday events throughout the anniversary season – some small, some large, some low-key, some loud and proud. Whether or not you live in Munich, are a Gasteig regular, a culture vulture or simply want to celebrate life and the arts, we’re happy to welcome you to the Gasteig. And if you want to capture an indelible memory of your visit to the Gasteig, why not head to our photo booth in Hall E have your picture taken.

Blast from the past
The Gasteig was officially opened on 10 November 1985 in the presence of Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker with a gala concert by the Munich Philharmonic under the baton of Sergiu Celibidache. It soon became the hub of Munich’s cultural life, hosting education and the arts. With more than 1800 events and up to two million visitors a year, it has long been Europe’s largest arts centre.
