40 Years of Gasteig

The Gasteig turns 40! Europe’s largest arts centre celebrates what it has been embodying for four decades now – culture and the arts. And that for a whole season.

Let’s celebrate together

You can find art and culture every day at the Gasteig. In our 40th anniversary season, under the motto “Celebrating the arts!”, we are celebrating all that holds society together – diversity, creativity and enthusiasm. And we are inviting you to join in the festivities again and again.

You can find art and culture every day at the Gasteig. In our 40th anniversary season, under the motto “Celebrating the arts!”, we are celebrating all that holds society together – diversity, creativity and enthusiasm. And we are inviting you to join in the festivities again and again.

It all starts on 15 October with a grand party, to which everyone is invited. There will be music and dancing, DJs and drinks, and we’ll be unveiling Ayzit Bostan’s spectacular art installation, PLAY.

The birthday party proper will take place near our actual anniversary: At 40 Years of Gasteig – The Birthday Surprise on 12 November, all the Gasteig’s resident organisations will present snippets from their varied programme. The joint gasteigXchange outreach programme with the Münchner Volkshochschule adult education centre, Munich Public Library, Munich Philharmonic, Munich Chamber Orchestra and University of Music and Theatre will put on a four-hour-long programme of all that you’ve come to expect to find at the Gasteig: music, dance, literature, games, theatre and fine art. And admission is absolutely free.

But we’ll also have birthday events throughout the anniversary season: some small, some large, some low-key, some loud and proud. Whether or not you live in Munich, are a Gasteig regular, a culture vulture or simply curious and simply want to celebrate life and the arts, we’re happy to welcome you to the Gasteig. The grand finale will take place on the first weekend in June 2026.

We will publish the full programme of events and activities here in good time. For programme tips, subscribe to our monthly e-mail newsletter, so you’ll never miss an event.

Blast from the past

The Gasteig was officially opened on 10 November 1985 in the presence of Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker with a gala concert by the Munich Philharmonic under the baton of Sergiu Celibidache. It soon became the hub of Munich’s cultural life, hosting education and the arts. With more than 1800 events and up to two million visitors a year, it has long been Europe’s largest arts centre.

You can read all about the history of the Gasteig arts centre here.
