Do you have a special ritual before a performance? If so, what kind?
I wish! Life is so hectic that no two days are the same! The only thing I try and do is take a nap and make sure I eat something before going onstage. If I can have a nap, then that’s a lucky day!
Do you rather tend to be nervous or more of a show-off on stage?
I’m neither. I tend to go very inwards before and during my performances. I try and create an intimate bubble that I share with audience and try and connect them to my and the composer’s storytelling. It’s a very personal and shared experience.
What things should always be available backstage?
It might be asking for too much, but a bed to lie down is the best! Promoters who provide dressing rooms with long sofas and good curtains have my eternal gratitude. Water, some protein and fruit is also very welcome!
Who would you like to perform with and why?
I’ve already had my wish fulfilled many times over by playing with my dear Martha Argerich. It’s always been thrilling and magical and she holds a very special place in my life and heart. But if I could have met and played with Rachmaninoff, I would have given anything for that opportunity.
