Backstage: María Dueñas

Aged 22, María Dueñas is considered one of the most interesting young violinists and one of Spain’s most successful classical musicians. Having taken up her instrument at the age of six, Dueñas was already studying at the university in Granada a year later. She subsequently studied in Dresden and Vienna, where she took part in the Yehudi Menuhin Competition. Her first album was released in 2023.

Do you have a lucky charm?

My lucky charms are the people who accompany me to my concerts, mostly my family and my manager. The audience can also convey happiness with its mood.

Do you rather tend to be nervous or more of a show-off on stage?

A mixture of both. I’m glad when my nerves kick in before a concert, because that means something special and extraordinary is about to happen. But on stage, my nerves give way to exhilaration.

Major or minor?

Minor.

If you were feeling peckish, what would you choose from the snack machine backstage in the Isarphilharmonie?

Sausage. I prefer savoury snacks.

What’s the first thing you do when you leave the stage after the final applause?

I take care of my violin, clean it and drink plenty of water.
