The Gasteig family

Together we are stronger: The Gasteig is home to important establishments that shape its character and are an indispensable part of Munich’s cultural life. The regular exchange in the Gasteig family provides inspiration and marks the birth of many a joint project. You could say culture is part of the Gasteig’s DNA.

gasteigXchange: Cultural education at the Gasteig

Outreach is an important function of cultural creatives. Its aim: to enable as many people as possible to participate in cultural activities. It’s a major undertaking that can only be achieved by working together – through community building, collaboration and cultural education. All of the Gasteig institutes operate outreach programmes. They meet each month to devise joint projects with the aim is of igniting enthusiasm for the arts in large swathes of the population and of dispelling reservations. The Gasteig family wants to make its arts centre appealing for the whole of society and ensure that everyone can take part and enjoy the arts.

gasteigXchange is the joint cultural education programme of the Munich Philharmonic, the Munich City Library, the MVHS Adult Education Center, the University of Music and Theatre Munich, the Munich Chamber Orchestra, and Gasteig München GmbH.

The idea behind it: At Gasteig HP8, each institution not only offers its own events. At gasteigXchange, everything is by everyone for everyone: the institutions of the Gasteig family celebrate culture together.

The Gasteig and the Department of Arts and Culture

For more than 30 years, the Gasteig has provided a diverse and contemporary cultural programme to suit all ages and tastes. This is, among others, thanks to the Department of Arts and Culture of the City of Munich, to which the Munich Public Library, MVHS adult education centre and the Munich Philharmonic – all based in the Gasteig – also belong. As well as this programme, the Department of Arts and Culture also works with numerous partners to put on around 200 other events in the Gasteig every year.

The halls and foyers of the Gasteig host major international festivals, including the Filmfest München film festival, dance, the SPIELART theatre festival, the literature festival and the Munich Biennale festival for new musical theatre. The local scene is also represented here and invites audiences to a variety of events, including the KLANGfest and Digitalanalog festivals.

This support from the city ensures that tickets are either affordable or – as is often the case – free to all. The Gasteig’s cultural programme sponsored by the city is in tune with the times. It features world premieres and new projects, with a particular focus on theatre, dance and music. Exhibitions address current topics and lectures are an opportunity to engage with contemporary events.
