Für Deutschland? – For Germany?An art project exploring memory, democracy and the future

Information about the festival

What does democracy mean today? What responsibility do art, memory and all of us bear at a time when right-wing ideologies are regaining influence in society? The exhibition Für Deutschland? invites visitors to explore these questions together.

At a time when democratic values are coming under increasing pressure and social polarisation is on the rise, the exhibition sees itself as a place for encounter, exchange and reflection. Rather than aiming to provide comprehensive answers or to cover every aspect of democracy, it brings together a variety of artistic perspectives that provide food for thought, raise new questions and spark discussion.

The starting points are historical events as well as current social developments and personal experiences. The works cover a wide range of topics, from remembrance culture and national symbols, through war and peace, to migration, identity and social cohesion.

The exhibition

In Hall X and on both levels of the Munich Public Library in Hall E, contemporary artists working in Munich exhibit installations, sculptures, video works, sound works and performance pieces.

Each station has its own focus and offers a unique perspective on the question of how democracy is continually renegotiated and reshaped.

The exhibition was initiated by Kollektiv Lotse (@kollektiv_lotse),

which regards art as a space for social action. The project is being held in collaboration with Munich Public Library and the Gasteig. It aims to connect with people on an emotional level through art and to encourage an open dialogue about the challenges of our time.

The supporting programme

The exhibition is complemented by a supporting programme that includes a film, a workshop, a panel discussions and performances.

  • On 4 October, there will be a rap workshop with 5elements e. V. and a screening of the film Kein Land für Niemand by Sea-Eye e. V.
  • A particular highlight will be the panel discussion Wege in eine offene Gesellschaft (Paths to an open society) on 7 October. Here, Gilda Sahebi, Anne Rabe and Dr Britta Schellenberg, moderated by Tuncay Acar, discuss ways of strengthening democracy (in German language).
  • The closing event on 8 October marks the end of the exhibition: A live performance by Lena-K, during which an SS honour ring will be melted down outside Hall X, followed by a stand-up routine by Simon Pearce and a DJ set by die_ley.
