“I am working on my mass, and with great pleasure. You will understand that as soon as I hear talk of operas, my conscience goes into turmoil and I immediately make the sign of the cross! What do you say? Are you not edified by me?” Thus Giuseppe Verdi mockingly commented on the tug of war between art and the church that was taking place at the time of his Requiem’s completion in 1874. At a time of enlightenment, science and revolution, the clergy called for a return to “pure sacred music”, and thus for the artist to retreat into anonymity behind their works. “Now more than ever”, Verdi presumably thought, for his Requiem became more distinctive, secular and dramatic than any prior work within the genre.
