The Dresden band Woods of Birnam, led by singer and actor Christian Friedel, are known for their sell-out performances that comprise live concert and theatre.
Their latest album, Solaris, was created for a theatre production based on Stanislaw Lem’s novel of the same name at Schauspiel Frankfurt and is now in the focus of their extremely rare music-only concerts. Rarely can we experience Woods of Birnam this close up, intense and engrossed in musical exploration.
Solaris is an evening of contrasts – with an electrifying band as a shadow, an entity, a figure of light. You can watch the musicians explore or let yourself be carried away into the atmospheric ocean of Polytheria on the planet Solaris. Older Woods of Birnam hits – some of them in new arrangements – are artfully woven into the new repertoire, as if they too had originated on Solaris.
Christian Friedel, known as an actor from films such as The Zone of Interest, The White Lotus and Babylon Berlin, doesn’t take the role of bandleader in Woods of Birnam, but has arranged and composed the music together with the band. The lyrics for Solaris come from fellow actor Robert Gwisdek. An inspiring, dense and very special concert evening that will almost certainly never be repeated in this form.
