The years 2020 and 2021 have taught us that our fate is not as much in our hands as we think it is. Rarely has such an inevitable event completely changed everyone’s lives throughout the world at a single stroke.

We were faced with an unstoppable, invisible enemy that has come forward every day with new horrific news of death. But our own inner life, too, has had to deal with feelings for which we had to be ashamed and justify ourselves or which were perhaps completely foreign to us before: disappointment, loneliness and longing.

In Schubert’s Liederyzklus, the topic of disappointment and loneliness is ever present. The song cycle, set by Franz Schubert to a cycle of poems by Wilhelm Müller, tells the story of a journeyman miller and his unrequited love. The miller’s disappointment and loneliness are shown in incredible detail. But these two feelings are not only experienced in the context of a failed love, but also in a personal stroke of fate, whatever form that may take.

Mio Nakamune (soprano) and Yadviga Grom (piano) have taken up the challenge of performing this masterpiece.
