“Completely alone | alone complete” – solo violin repertoire is among the most intense and demanding forms of instrumental music. In her programme, violinist Usha Kapoor explores the evolution of the solo violin over three centuries, demonstrating how a whole world of music can emerge from this solitary instrument.
Unaccompanied, a musical space unfolds in which sound, structure and expression lie entirely in the hands of a single performer.
The programme opens with Max Reger’s Prelude in G minor, Op 117 No 2, whose dense harmonies and contrapuntal structure intentionally draw on the Baroque tradition. The evening’s highlight is Johann Sebastian Bach’s Partita in D minor, BWV 1004 – one of the major works in the violin repertoire. Another high point of the solo violin repertoire is the monumental Chaconne, which combines architectural rigour with emotional depth. Grażyna Bacewicz’s Sonata for Solo Violin (1941) offers a glimpse into the sound of the 20th century, being characterised by rhythmic energy, virtuoso lines and a modern sound language. The programme concludes with Eugène Ysaÿe’s Sonata No 3 in D minor, Op 27, Ballade – a dramatic and technically virtuosic work that showcases the range of expression of modern violin technique.
