United, in the composer’s words, “by the bond of art”, Gustav Mahler conducted the orchestra – which traditionally has no principal conductor – on many occasions, including on its first overseas tour to Paris in 1900.

Following Mahler’s death, the Vienna Philharmonic premiered his Symphony No 9 in 1912 as part of his musical legacy. The conductor was Bruno Walter, a close associate of Mahler’s. The unmistakable sound of the Vienna Philharmonic, rooted in tradition and a keen sense of style, combined with an exciting conductor and one of the groundbreaking masterpieces of musical history, promises to be a musical event of exceptional brilliance.

His debut conducting this year’s Vienna Philharmonic New Year’s Concert received high praise by audiences and the media alike. There had already been talk of a generational change in the run-up to the concert Then came the concert itself, with which Yannick Nézet-Séguin won everyone’s hearts as a “radiant, world-embracing debutant” (BR-Klassik).

That he has a refreshingly direct, unpretentious rapport with the audience was evident not least when, at the end of the concert, he plunged into the delighted crowd to conduct the Radetzky March from the auditorium. Nézet-Séguin had already demonstrated his knack for major events back in 2023, when the Vienna Philharmonic invited him to conduct their Summer Night Concert at Schönbrunn. A year earlier, the French-Canadian conductor, who is director of music at the Metropolitan Opera, the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Orchestre Métropolitain, had saved three of the orchestra’s guest performances in New York when he stepped in at short notice for Valery Gergiev.
