“Crossing the Bridge” between Orient and Occident is the evening’s motto this year. For Al-Andalus الأندلس is not only the Arabic name for the parts of the Iberian Peninsula ruled by Muslims between 711 and 1492; it’s also a state of mind. In the time of Al-Andalus, Europe witnessed an extraordinary cross-fertilisation of religions, arts and cultures. A feeling of togetherness developed that bridged all differences. The magic of Al-Andalus will accompany us throughout the evening.

The evening starts with a live concert with the band Maqamundo, who serve up a musical feast that conjures up the taste of sweet dates and aromatic red wine. Combining traditional Arabic music with flamenco, the four band members reinterpret both Arabic and Spanish classics. While approaching both traditions with respect, they are naturally driven by their desire to explore new territory and overcome cultural boundaries.

Following an interval, the evening’s second half sees talents of the Oriental dance scene perform traditional dances from the banks of the Nile to the Orient, from Egypt to Andalusia.

Author Lize de Kock will also read excerpts from her latest novel, Full Body Shaking, taking the audience into the very heart of Cairo and shining a light on the healing power of dance.

This year, there will again be the opportunity of presenting your own talent on stage in the Gasteig. If you want to take part in the Open Stage, send your application to angela_ategmodous@yahoo.de.
