The film tells the story of the Jewish population of Thessaloniki, 90 per cent of which was wiped out during World War II under the German Nazi government’s ghettoisation and deportation programme, supervised by Adolf Eichmann. Until that time, Thessaloniki – the “Mother of Israel” – had for centuries been the home of Sephardic Jews. The film reconstructs this dramatic story and tells of the experiences of a city that was robbed of its multicultural flair in one fell swoop.
