Suzanne Vega is coming to Germany for five exclusive concerts. The two-time Grammy winner will perform songs from all periods of her career, accompanied by her long-time guitarist, Gerry Leonard, and, for the first time, by cellist Stephanie Winters.

After her sold-out concerts last year, Suzanne Vega is coming to Munich, Hamburg, Berlin, Offenbach and Cologne in October 2025 with her Flying With Angels tour. She will be performing many hits old and new, from Tom’s Diner and Luka to her latest tracks from her upcoming album.

Widely regarded as one of the foremost songwriters of her generation, Suzanne Vega emerged as a leading figure of the folk revival of the early 1980s when, accompanying herself on acoustic guitar, she sang what has been called contemporary folk or neo-folk of her own creation in the clubs of Greenwich Village. Since the release of her self-titled, critically acclaimed 1985 debut album, she has given performances that convey deep emotion. NPR Music noted that she “has been making vital, inventive music” throughout the course of her decades-long career.

Bearing the stamp of a masterful storyteller who “observes the world with a clinically poetic eye” (The New York Times), Vega’s songs have tended to focus on urban life, ordinary people and real-world subjects. Notably succinct and understated, her work is immediately recognizable – as distinct and thoughtful as it was when her voice was first heard on the radio over 30 years ago.

Suzanne Vega’s latest work, Rats, is a chronicle of her home town’s notorious rat population, whose publication in September 2024 coincided with the first national urban rat summit, held in New York. A taster for her upcoming album, the track is accompanied by an animated video by filmmaker Martha Colburn.

Vega’s 2020 live album “An Evening of New York Songs and Stories” includes hits such as Luka and Tom’s Diner as well as other originals and a cover of Walk On The Wild Side by her late friend Lou Reed. Also in the mix: “New York Is My Destination” from “Lover, Beloved: Songs from an Evening with Carson McCullers”, Vega’s 2016 album of her one-woman play about Southern gothic novelist Carson McCullers. A film adaptation of this play premiered at the SXSW Festival in March 2022 and features songs by Vega with music by Duncan Sheik.

Vega’s debut album, which was co-produced by Steve Addabbo and Lenny Kaye, achieved platinum status. Marlene on the Wall was a surprise hit in the UK and Rolling Stone included the record in its 100 Greatest Recordings of the 1980s.  Stardom arrived for Vega with her 1987 follow-up album, Solitude Standing. Nominated for three Grammys, including Record of the Year, the album, which contained Luka, sold three million copies worldwide. Its opener was an a cappella piece, Tom’s Diner, about a nondescript restaurant near Columbia University. When this track was remixed by the British electronic duo DNA and bootlegged as Oh Susanne Without Vega’s permission, Vega’s voice suddenly appeared in the most unlikely of places: the clubs. When she authorised an official release of the remix under the song’s original title, it reached number 5 on the Billboard pop charts.

In 1992, she teamed up with producer Mitchell Froom for the album 99.9F°, whose sound inspired monikers such as “industrialized folk music” and “techno folk”. 99.9F° went gold and won a New York Music Award for Best Rock Album. In 1996, Vega returned with the similarly daring Nine Objects of Desire, also produced by Froom. In 2007, she released the Grammy-winning Beauty & Crime, a very personal reflection on her hometown of New York City after the loss of her brother Tim Vega and the tragedy of 9/11. Vega’s love for the city shines through both as a theme and as a setting, as she melds past and present, public and private, familiar sounds with the completely new – just like the city itself.
