40 years of the Gasteig and 25 years of the Long Night of Music – if that’s not a reason to celebrate! JJ Jones’ cult series Same Old Song dedicates this evening to birthday songs of all kinds, interpreted by a wide range of artists. And we want you to join in!

The stage is yours!

To celebrate its double anniversary, the Gasteig HP8 is looking for amateurs and professionals to reinterpret birthday-themed songs. Delicately or with gusto. Solo or ensemble. Classic, playfully or totally against the grain. Whether you sing in a choir, play in a band, rehearse in your school class or simply make music at home in the evenings – you’re welcome to take part. Even if you’ve never stood on stage before and have an idea for a birthday song, why not join in our birthday marathon. Our aim is to turn a clichéd ritual, a song that is normally sung between lighting the candles and presenting the birthday cake into a grand party as part of the Long Night of Music at the Gasteig HP8.

The Same Old Song format was conceived in 2013 by JJ Jones, who was born in Detroit and lives in Munich, with a marathon performance of Led Zeppelin’s classic, Stairway to Heaven. Since then, there have been 43 editions at 14 locations. Being a participative event, everyone is invited to join in. “Everyone can be part of this unique collective concert,” says JJ Jones. “Whether a whole five minutes or a very short performance, every voice counts.

To allow as many people as possible to take part, Same Old Song is providing its own band: a quartet consisting of guitar, bass, keyboard and drums, which accompanies anyone who wants support in presenting their version of a birthday song with a backing line-up of their choice.

If you want to take to the stage at the Long Night of Music in Hall X of the Gasteig HP8, you can register now at sameoldsong@jjjones.de.
