The Carinthian baritone Thomas Salzmann and the Slovenian accordionist Sajdin Horozović invite you to their re-interpretation of Romantic art songs – for voice and concert accordion.
For several years now, the two musicians have been united by a passion for re-interpreting well-known lied cycles to present them in a new light.
Following their adaptation of Franz Schubert’s Winterreise, their attention now turns to another treasure trove of Romantic art songs: Robert Schumann’s lied cycle Dichterliebe (Op 48) – composed in 1840 to poems by Heinrich Heine. Schumann crafted a musical narrative from Heine’s texts, full of longing, irony, tenderness and inner turmoil – an emotional portrait of love that still moves us today. Performed with an accordion, this masterpiece takes on a new sense of intimacy.
In the evening’s second half, the duo unveils an exciting discovery: songs by Josip Ipavec, a composer from a prominent Slovenian musical family – the Ipavecs – who played a similar role in what was then the Austrian province of Slovenia as the Strauss dynasty did in Vienna. Ipavec, too, set Heine’s poems to music and composed late Romantic art songs in German – rarely heard, which makes them all the more special.
Look forward to an evening that presents familiar works in a new light and brings forgotten pieces to life: Heinrich Heine, the music of Romanticism and two composers brought together through song and the accordion.
