The Basel Duo Simolka-Wohlhauser Basel specialises in performing contemporary vocal music. Delivered with verve and vitality, the programme right on the pulse of contemporary artistic practice, featuring staged performance, improvisation, theatricality and electronic music.
The duo has set itself the aim of performing recent vocal works from the field of contemporary music to provide fresh impetus for the further development of this genre.
Their programmes feature vocal works in a wide variety of styles. From light-hearted theatrical pieces to contemplative works and more sophisticated pieces, from experiments in sound poetry to the setting of poems to music and wordplay, the duo explores a wide range of possible musical and linguistic forms of expression.
Its programme consists largely of works written specifically for the duo. These result from of intensive collaborations with composers from various European countries – including Romania, Albania, Azerbaijan, Poland, Germany, France, England and Switzerland – and present an exciting overview of different approaches to contemporary composition.
In collaboration with Traces d’aujourd’hui/Paris, Neue Musik in Cologne, Kerger-Haff in Luxembourg, Neue Musik in Erlangen and the Heart-Core Cultural Association in Romania.
