In May, the Munich Symphony Orchestra takes its audience on a journey to the sunny south, with rousing works by Piazzolla, Ravel’s Boléro and Bizet’s Carmen Suite. The evening’s soloist is Omar Massa, himself from Buenos Aires, who shines on the bandoneon and is hailed as a link between classical and Argentinian music.

In 2023, Omar was honoured with the Bandoneon Prize of Krefeld – the city where the bandoneon was invented. Praised by Argentine newspaper Diario de Cuyo as “one of the most brilliant bandoneonists of recent years”, he made his debut at the age of six with Piazzolla pieces at the Café Tortoni, a famous traditional tango venue in Buenos Aires, and began studying music at Argentina’s Conservatorio Nacional Superior de Música at the age of 12. After being nominated for the premier award in the Argentinian recording industry for his CD, Tribute to Piazzolla, the Piazzolla family personally invited him to play Astor Piazzolla’s bandoneon, making him the only musician to date on which this honour has been bestowed.
