Munich Philharmonic: Sibelius / Rautavaara / Vaughan WilliamsTarmo Peltokoski (conductor), Yuja Wang (piano)
The Finn Tarmo Peltokoski, aged 25 and already principal conductor in Toulouse and Hong Kong, combines the works of two of his countrymen with the “Symphony of a Londoner”, as Ralph Vaughan Williams liked to call his Symphony No 2. Rautavaara’s neo-romantic Piano Concerto No 1, played by the virtuoso Yuja Wang, at times echoes the spirit of Sibelius.

Just as Sibelius created musical landscapes in his symphonies, Vaughan Williams created an impression of the big city in his A London Symphony, replete with foggy November afternoons, the city’s bustling night-life and the famous Westminster Chimes.
