Shostakovich, too, infuses his Cello Concerto No 1 with tension and humour: forever negotiating a fine line between beauty and despair, the cello feels its way through a world of nervous energy, grotesque whims and melancholic depths. And then there is Maurice Ravel’s La valse: a waltz that tumbles, whirls and radiates; a firework display that conjures up the Viennese ballroom splendour of yesteryear.
