His Opus 18 marked Sergei Rachmaninoff’s compositional comeback after a serious creative crisis and soon brought the composer international fame. The legendary concerto with its grand gestures and memorable melodies continues to be regarded as the quintessential Romantic piano concerto – as well as one of the most challenging to perform.
Known for his transparent, feather-light playing, the Russian-American pianist Kirill Gerstein is the ideal choice for “Rach 2”. Complementing Rachmaninoff’s crowd-puller, Santtu-Matias Rouvali will present two (re)discoveries that exemplify the diversity of Russian music. Cheryomushki was the name of a satellite town erected on the outskirts of Moscow in 1956, which Dmitri Shostakovich commemorated with his outstanding operetta, whose innocent melodies and humorous persiflage barely conceal its socially critical undertones. The programme concludes with Alexander Borodin’s Symphony No 2 – a captivating homage to Russia’s history and musical heritage.
