Conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali has curated an exciting programme for this evening, which includes well-known melodies as well as works that are rarely performed on stage. The pianist is Kirill Gerstein.

Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No 2 was more than just a musical masterpiece for the composer – it was his comeback after a serious creative crisis. Today, it counts among the most famous piano concertos of all time. With its voluptuous melodies and dramatic climaxes, it is also frequently used in films and pop music. As well as being emotionally stirring, the Concerto demands exceptional skill from the soloist and is thus in perfect hands with the Russian-American pianist Kirill Gerstein.

In addition to this audience favourite, conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali takes us on a musical journey of discovery, featuring two works that are rarely heard in the concert hall: Alexander Borodin’s Symphony No 2, composed as an homage to Russia’s history and culture; and excerpts from the satirical operetta Moscow, Cheryomushki by Dmitri Shostakovich. Malte Arkona, as the evening’s narrator, will provide background information on the works.
