Munich Philharmonic: Pärt / Say / Sibelius / Respighifeaturing Avi Avital (mandolin), conducted by John Storgårds
A musical journey between East and West: under the baton of John Storgårds, a programme unfolds that explores the Orient from four very different perspectives.

Arvo Pärt’s Orient & Occident combines Eastern-sounding melodies with Western harmony.
Fazıl Say, a world-class pianist and composer with an inimitable style, embodies cultural diversity. This mandolin concerto was composed for Avi Avital, who has long been tirelessly campaigning for new repertoire for his instrument. Here, the classical concert format meets oriental music, jazz, minimalism and rhythmic energy.
In his incidental music for Belshazzar’s Feast, Jean Sibelius presents the Orient as a figment of the imagination, an exotic backdrop, without entirely abandoning his Nordic style.
Ottorino Respighi’s rarely performed suite from the ballet Belkis, Queen of Sheba is a work of the highest order. Rich Richard Strauss-esque soundscapes blend with “authentic” elements: Arabic drums and irregular time signatures as well as Jewish and Arabic melodies.
