In his debut with the Munich Philharmonic, the versatile Gigashvili encounters an unusual instrument: the musical saw, to which Aram Khachaturian assigns a prominent role in his piano concerto. Alain Altinoglu opens the evening with the prelude to Khovanshchina, which emits a remarkable calm for an opera about religious and political conflicts.

As the winner of the Georgian edition of The Voice, Giorgi Gigashvili could have had a promising career as a pop singer. But winning a piano competition and meeting Martha Argerich prompted him to take a different path. Today, he thrills audiences and enjoys great success in concert halls and clubs alike – with jazz, pop, electro, Georgian folk and classical music.

Daudet’s drama L’Arlésienne is centred on a story about love and suicide inspired by true events, to which Georges Bizet composed impressive stage music. Although the musical drama flopped at its premiere, the two orchestral suites have enjoyed popularity to this day, especially the rousing Farandole with its tonal affiliation to Provence.
