Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote his only clarinet concerto in 1791 for his friend and clarinettist Anton Stadler. In the famous Adagio in particular, Mozart creates simple beauty with modest means, as Alexandra Gruber, principal clarinettist with the Munich Philharmonic, will demonstrate.
Almost exactly a century later and until his death in 1896, Anton Bruckner worked on his monumental Symphony No 9, which he saw as his legacy dedicated to God. The world premiere of the uncompleted symphony in its unadulterated original version is one of the highlights of the Munich Philharmonic’s history. Siegmund von Hausegger conducted the Munich Philharmonic on 2 April 1932 at the premiere, which heralded a turning point in the performance practice for Bruckner symphonies.
