A veil of moonlight, the pitter-patter of fairy footsteps: Felix Mendelssohn’s overture to his A Midsummer Night’s Dream, with its wispy opening, transforms the concert hall into an enchanted nocturnal forest – a friendly fairy-tale fantasy that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart seems to have anticipated with his Piano Concerto in E-flat major, K 482. Playfulness and elegance intertwine especially in the buoyant final movement to create that fanciful inflection, which Emanuel Ax will convey perfectly with his refined, uncontrived playing. Concluding the programme, the American conductor Ryan Bancroft takes the audience on a journey into the mysteries of an enchanted underwater world: inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s tale The Little Mermaid, Alexander Zemlinsky drew on his own ill-fated love for Alma Mahler in his richly coloured score, creating a symphonic retelling full of emotional turmoil and stormy seas.
