Leonard Bernstein’s music of the ballet Fancy Free tells of the adventures of a different threesome. Bernstein underscored the experiences of three sailors on shore leave with dynamic music, humour and hints of jazz. Theo Mackeben also enjoyed success with his easy-listening music. He achieved fame as the conductor of the world premiere of the Threepenny Opera. With his Symphonic Ballad, composed in 1946, he shows that he also masters more serious music.

Erich Wolfgang Korngold, one of Hollywood’s most important film composers, had the rare privilege of being able to choose his own film projects. In 1946, he wrote the score for Devotion, a film biography about the Brontë sisters Charlotte and Emily. While the film is of little historical significance, Korngold created a timeless masterpiece with his soundtrack.
