Although Devotion, the 1946 Hollywood biopic about the Brontë sisters, was a flop, Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s masterful film score continues to captivate, portraying the dramatic potential of the plot far more effectively than the film itself. In the year the film was premiered, Theo Mackeben also penned his cello concerto. The composer went down in history as the first to conduct of the Threepenny Opera in 1928. Floris Mijnders, principal cellist of the Munich Philharmonic, plays the magnificently orchestrated Symphonic Ballad – rediscovered after languishing on the sidelines of the cello repertoire for a long time.

Continuing the Hollywood theme is Kinah, which Leonard Slatkin composed as a tribute to his parents, Felix Slatkin and Eleanor Aller, who made their living in Hollywood as a violinist and cellist respectively. With his sprightly ballet music Fancy Free, Leonard Bernstein paved the way to his later Broadway success On the Town, creating a milestone in modern ballet history.
