The Russian pianist Yulianna Avdeeva is regarded as the “mistress of soft tones”. For her debut with the Munich Philharmonic, she will perform Frédéric Chopin’s Piano Concerto No 2. The winner of the 2010 Chopin Competition has a special affinity with the Polish composer’s music.

“Chopin’s music is so rich and moves me deeply.” Avdeeva’s words may well have resonated with Amy Beach, who made her debut as a concert pianist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1885 aged just 18 – also with Chopin’s Piano Concerto No 2. A few years later, she made music history with her Gaelic Symphony, the first symphonic work to be composed by a female American composer. Inspired by Antonín Dvořák, she incorporated traditional Irish melodies into her work.
