In 1896, Amy Beach made music history in Boston: her Gaelic Symphony was the first symphonic work to be penned by a female American composer. In it, Beach wove Old English, Scottish and Irish melodies into a magnificent symphonic panorama. Beach’s talents also extended to the piano, on which she performed Frédéric Chopin’s Piano Concerto No 2 with none less than the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Today, Yulianna Avdeeva assumes this role, bringing out the subtle nuances and profound emotions of this poetic work with great sensitivity. A concert that shows that there’s more to music history than you may realise.
