In this all-French programme, Kent Nagano combines the Romanticism of Berlioz and the Impressionism of Debussy with Caída libre by Rodolphe Bruneau-Boulmier, who was born in 1982 and whose works Nagano has already included in his programmes on several occasions.

“French music is clarity, elegance and joy of the spirit…”, said Claude Debussy. While this may apply to Debussy’s La Mer, which conjures up sublime images of wind an waves, it rings not quite as true for the highly romantic music of Hector Berlioz. Contrary to what his song cycle’s title may suggest, Les Nuits d’été is not about balmy summer nights, but rather spirits the listener away into mysterious, at times melancholy night-time moods. The French mezzo-soprano Marianne Crebassa performs the songs, with which Berlioz bid farewell to his erstwhile love. Berlioz’s Le Corsaire also celebrates Romantic ideals, setting the notion of a noble pirate’s life of adventure to music.
