Incessant research and exploration of music history are part and parcel of Luciano Berio’s approach to composition. Berio, the most important representative of Italian modernism, would have celebrated his 100th birthday on 24 October 2025. The result of his meticulous investigations, his Sinfonia, is an expertly crafted collage of quotations drawn from the Baroque to the avant-garde and a zenith in the history of music. Eight vocal soloists of the Cantando Admont vocal ensemble, which specialises in contemporary music, guarantee the perfect fusion of orchestra and human voice, just as Berio intended in the etymological sense of “sinfonia” (harmony). Like Berio, Claude Debussy also worked with tonal colours, symbolism and poetic associations in his Images.
